How Many Poker Chips Do You Need? Set Size Guide for NZ Home Games

The most common question we get: how many chips does a proper home game actually need? The short answer is 35 to 50 chips per player for a tournament with rebuys, and a bit fewer for a casual cash game. The long answer depends on your table size, so here is the maths done for you.

The quick rule

Count your regular players, multiply by 40, and round up to the nearest set size. Four mates around the kitchen table can run comfortably on 200 chips. A full ten seater running a proper tournament wants 400 or more, because rebuys and colour ups burn through spare chips faster than you expect.

Which set fits your game

4 to 8 players: the Monte Carlo 200pc set runs five denominations from $50 to $5,000 with a total bank of $171,250. That is enough for solid starting stacks and a round of rebuys at a six seat game.

8 to 12 players: the Monte Carlo 300pc set is the most popular size for a reason. Same five denominations, a bank of $212,500, and enough depth to run 15 players in a pinch.

10 to 20 players: the Monte Carlo 500pc set adds a sixth denomination, the $10,000 chip, and carries a total bank of $520,000. This is multi table territory, or one table with very deep stacks.

Why denominations matter more than raw count

A pile of identical chips is not a poker set. What makes a game run smoothly is the spread: small chips for blinds, mid chips for betting, big chips to keep tall stacks tidy.
